Breastfeeding Infographic
Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 10:26PM As I sit here on the eve of launching the breastfeeding infographic, I must admit, I'm a little edgy about the whole thing.
Yes, I think breastfeeding is the way to go, but I don't want to come off as some smug, know-it-all, holier-than-thou bystander who doesn't understand the complexities of modern women's lives and the choices that we face on a day to day basis.
I even thought for a moment that I would reserve it just for my subscribers (am I really that gun shy? maybe). But at the end of the day, I just don't think that the average American woman HAS good information about breastfeeding prior to giving birth.
I just don't.
So to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week, it seemed like the right thing to do. So the hell with it! Here goes... (deep breath)...

I LOVED your breastfeeding infographic. I thought it was so insightful. I think that it is great that you are willling to share your opinion, and what you learned through your own experiences. Not only was a learning, but I was laughing. I am 16 weeks pregnant right now with my first and I have been reading so many different things on the internet, and I can honestly say that your sight has been the most help. Thank you so much for making the science part of being a mom fun to read as well as very informational!

I just found your site and felt oh so guilty at looking at the info graphic.
I enjoy your section on breastfeeding and I agree, I wish more women would give it a go. And I really love breastfeeding my baby (currently 5 months old). But one thing I think you need to clear up on your section over there is on pumping, You actually suggest pumping as a great way to know how much your baby eats at a feeding. This is really bad advice. Most women don't respond to the pump the way they respond to a baby and produce way more for a baby than a pump. And even then, research shows that actually feeding from the breast is way better than a bottle period, no matter what is coming out of the bottle. Breast milk doesn't always equal breast milk.
And on that note...I can't pump worth a darn. I've tried everything, really everything. And I pump about 1-2 oz. per session. And I cannot really not work either, so my baby gets formula during the day and is breastfed while I'm with her. It's a decision I've recently come to terms with, but I'll admit, the infographic resurfaced lots of the guilt I'm having. But ultimately, I'll be able to send her to college someday because I work. So 10 oz. of formula a day will have to do.
