Stroller Footmuffs, Handmuffs and More

There’s nothing quite like a brisk winter walk, especially when wintertime cabin fever is setting in (RED RUM… RED RUM). And while you may work up a sweat pushing the stroller around, your baby is just sitting there in the stroller. Freezing.

Add a little wintertime wind and… brrrr.

The solution for this is a stroller footmuff — a must-have in the wintertime (or in San Francisco, the summertime, LOL).

Footmuff Stroller bags (sometimes called stroller buntings or “bunting bags”) have slits in the back and bottom, so you can pass the straps through and install it into the stroller. Unlike a blanket that will inevitably end up dragging on the ground and getting stuck in the wheels, a footmuff will stay in place for good.

Yes, you could also rely on heavy clothing like a snow suit to keep your little one warm, but many babies and toddlers don’t love being stuffed into heavy, long clothing with sleeves. Also, kids outgrow clothing at a breakneck speed, so you may find that you use that adorable snowsuit only a couple of times.

Some people also use these to keep baby warm in a car seat, but again, it’s not advised. Also, I like to leave mine in the stroller all winter without having to take it in and out each time because #aintnobodygottimeforthat.

Ok let’s get to it:

Best Stroller Footmuffs for Babies and Toddlers

1. JJ Cole Original Bundleme Footmuff Stroller Bag ~ $45

The Original JJ Cole Bundleme is still a mommy-favorite after all these years. If your coldest days aren’t terribly cold (or for the shoulder season), check out the Bundleme.

The interior lining is warm, faux shearling that you can zip down to control the temp. It’s water/wind resistant and comes in a variety of cute colors. The BundleMe comes in 2 sizes: infant and toddler. If you’re not sure which one to go for, the Toddler size will give you better longevity.

JJ Cole also offers an “Urban” BundleMe, which is quilted and wind/water resistant – me lovie this one! It also has a hood/canopy and cute buttons up the front.

2. CozyMe Universal Winter Stroller Footmuff ~ $57

This knock-off brand on Amazon gets 2 thumbs up. It looks an awful like the JJ Cole Urban BundleMe, but the big difference is this one has an extendable zippered foot area that can be opened up to give you an extra 4 inches – and allows for cooling off.

The bottom of it is reinforced to give it some extra durability. We like that it fits a wide variety of strollers, including umbrella strollers, and it last up to 36 months.

3. LL Bean Adventure Snow Bunting ~ $119

To know LL Bean is to love them. This highly-rated stroller bunting is designed for the coldest of New England winters. The outer shell is made of water-resistant nylon, while the inner lining is a snuggly shearling fleece. This footmuff is your best bet for keeping out the elements.

The updated two-layer opening makes it easier to get your kiddo in and out and the integrated hood keeps your baby or toddler extra warm on cold days. The back opening allows the stroller harnesses to pass right through and the quick-snap top cover is removable for breathability when the weather warms up a bit.

4. 7 A.M. Enfant PlushPOD ~ $120

Gorgeous, chic and so so so warm! 7 A.M. Enfant makes cozy, heavyweight car seat and stroller cover/footmuffs designed for temperatures down to 5 degrees F. And they do so with style. Yes, you’ll see these everywhere in NYC and Paris.

The PlushPOD can be used in the car seat as well (it has a removable back panel-—eliminating extra fabric between baby’s back and the safety harness). The outer shell is water repellent, and the poly insulation and microfleece lining are extra delicious.

7AM Enfant Footmuff Stroller Bag

Their PlushPod sizes run S/M (0-18M) and M/L (18M-3T). Water repellent. Bonus: the entire setup is machine washable and dryable.

5. 7 A.M. Enfant Blanket “212” ~ $200

Much like the JJ Cole “Polar” Bundleme, the beloved Blanket 212 from 7 A.M. Enfant also grows with your baby through the toddler years with extendable panels. It also has a large, warm hood.

This is a mom-favorite for those that live in bitter cold weather; no doubt the 212 is the gold standard. The Blanket 212 has a more contemporary design and comes in a variety of fashions. It can also convert into a large blanket and is suitable for down to -4 degrees F.

Considerations for Buying a Stroller Fottmuff

Age/ Size

Generally speaking, there are footmuffs designed for a particular age (infant, toddler, etc.) – and there are those that are expandable that “grow with you”. Expandable products generally offer a better value, while specific sizes offer a snugger fit. Your choice.

Compatibility

Note that not all footmuffs are compatible with all types and brands of strollers. Most products list the types of strollers that the product is compatible with; you can also check the dimensions/measurements. Many stroller brands make their own footmuffs, such as the Mockingbird Footmuff.

Note that many of the upscale infant car seats, like the Nuna Pipa Lite Rx, come with their own footmuff for the seat itself.

Material

These buntings vary greatly in warmth factor… meaning, your climate will dictate which one to choose.

For the maximum warmth factor, choose a footmuff that is lined and insulated and with material like shearling or fleece. Pay special attention for fabrics that offer waterproofing and wind-proofing. If winters are on the milder side, make sure you can un-zip the bag to prevent overheating and allow for air flow.

Parents, we didn’t forget about you! Those of you pushing a stroller in a cold climate will totally appreciate a good hand muff. Hand muffs stay attached to the stroller, so you don’t have to worry about dropping or losing a mitten. It also allows you to tend to your child, phone, drink, etc. much easier simply by pulling your hands out.

Come, I’ll show you…

Best Stroller Handmuffs

1. 7 A.M. Enfant Warmmuffs ~ $48

These stroller gloves stay attached to the stroller where they belong, so you can tend to buckling and zipping baby with your bare hands.

The velcro allows you to pull them tightly around the stroller handle – and you can tighten them if the wind starts to blow through. Again, if you need to stop and grab something – or check your phone – this is SUCH a better solution than wearing your own gloves or mittens that require you to take them off and stuff in your pockets (or wedge them under your arm or between your knees). Trust me on this one!

2. Intipal Warm Muff Stroller Gloves ~ $19

If you’re looking for a cheaper knock-off, check out these imported/generic stroller gloves.

These are similar to the brand name above, and are also completely waterproof. Our readers seem to like them just fine – and that’s good enough for me 👍🏻.

That’s all, folks! We hope you found some goodies to keep bébé warm this winter. Cheers!

  1. Do you know where the JJ Cole Polar Bundleme is being sold? We are looking for it and it appears to be discontinued 🙁
Love your recs, thank you for saving my brain as we expect baby #1 this winter!

    1. Hi, there! I’m Charlene, Lucie’s List managing editor. I took a look around, and it seems the JJ Cole Polar Bundleme is no longer available. Your best bet would be to look on second-hand sites. Otherwise, I would recommend the 7 AM Enfant 212 blanket, which also grows with your child. Hope this helps.

    1. 7am Enfant used to have one! The 7AM Enfant Duo Double Stroller Blanket — but I think it’s been discontinued. I would look on eBay and other 2nd hand sites 🙂
