Postpartum Skincare

If you’re breastfeeding, we recommend your postpartum skincare routine follows the same guidelines as during pregnancy. That’s because some of the ingredients absorbed through your skin may make their way into your milk, and to baby.

The Skin Sisters love introducing gentle AHAs like glycolic acid or lactic acid during this time to give a new mom’s skin a soft glow without irritation. Breastfeeding is also a great time to introduce antioxidants, which improve the texture and appearance of the skin. The Skin Sisters often recommend ‘double duty’ products like La Roche Posay AOX SPF 50, which offers both sun and antioxidant protection or products like Colorescience Total Eye 3-In-1, which offers under-eye coverage as well as hydration and UV protection.

After you finish breastfeeding, you can restart your retinol (which stimulates collagen production and regulates skin cell turnover) and explore other skincare options again. Our basic anti-aging skincare recommendation for a woman in her 20s, 30s, and 40s would be to use sunscreen, antioxidants, and retinol. These are great building blocks for an effective skincare regimen. They protect, repair, and enhance the appearance of the skin.

Pregnancy, Postpartum and Nursing Skincare: Bottom line

The good news is there are many pregnancy and nursing-safe skincare products out there that can help your skin go through pregnancy and postpartum with very few bumps (literally and figuratively). And don’t forget, all of this is temporary. After nursing, you’ll get your skin… and that retinol night cream back. And all will be good in the world again.

Good luck!
