Gearing up for a snowy adventure with your little one? Whether your child is walking or not, you’ll want a coat or snowsuit that will keep him warm and dry. Since there are tons of options out there, we did your homework for you and selected the best winter coats for toddlers and babies out there.
What constitutes the best kids winter coats, you ask? It’s not just about how cute a puffy jacket looks on a tiny human. Since kids tend to over-cool much more easily and quickly than adults, a winter coat needs to be warm and waterproof (or at least water-resistant). You’ll also want it to be easy to take on and off, especially if your little one still needs diaper changes.
Alright, alright… Winter is coming, so are you ready to brave the cold? Here are our absolute favorite kids winter coats for toddler and babies.
1. Target, Cat & Jack Midweight Puffer Jacket ~ $26.99
From 12 month to 7 years
This puffer is pretty lightweight, but oh so so warm. I love the soft fleece lining and the retro look. It’s colorful and fun. It’s water and wind-resistant. And the outer shell is made of 100% recycled polyester. The girl version (adorned with a cute rainbow) is equally cute!
2. Target, Cat & Jack Star Long Parka ~ $39.99
12 months to 6 years
If you’re on the market for something a bit warmer and more heavy duty, this parka from Target does a great job. It has a faux-fur lining attached to the hood, and the sleeves can expend two inches to grow with your child (what??)! We love the fun shine that the stars add to the jacket, and we bet your little one will too.
3. Primary, The Winter Puffer Coat ~ $68
2 Years – 12 Years
Take on winter with sunny bright colors and soft, puffy jackets are lined with fleece for extra coziness. Lightweight, yet amazingly warm, these puffers feature thumbholes on the sleeves — brilliant! Primary also has some lightweight (but warm) puffer jackets that run from 0-3 months to 12 years.
For the coldest of days, this bunting from The North Face is a wintertime favorite. It has a double zipper front for easy on and off and an attached hood. Car seat safe.
5. The North Face Infant Perrito Jacket ~ $70
Winter won’t be dull this season. This unique thermal (durable water-repellent) winter jacket reverses from a quilted solid to reveal a bright, playful print inside. Insulated with warm Heatseeker(™) Aero insulation with asymmetrical front zip that prevents abrasion on little chins.
0-18 M, or 0-2T (select sizes)
Other favorites of our Canadian friends are the puffer coat and bunting bag from Patagonia. Recycled polyester shell features Deluge® DWR (durable water-repellent) technology and is wind resistant.
For hard core snow-play, the lining features compression 100-g thermogreen insulation that keeps your baby warm even if they’re wet. The slanted zipper allows for easy on/off. There’s even extra room to accommodate diapers. Turn it inside out for a new look, a reversible quilt pattern.
Lots of bang for your buck.
7. LL Bean Kids Adventure Seeker Parka ~ $109
Sizes: Little Kids 4T – Kids X-Large
This insulated parka is a great value for a lot of warmth without a lot of weight. Water-resistant fabric sheds snow and rain. Tuck-away hood zips into the collar. Velcro closure and elastic cuffs help lock out the cold.
8. Appaman Kids Denali Down Coat ~ $148
From 2 years to 14 years
This down-filled coat features a sleek outer shell and super soft sherpa lining. It has a removable faux-fur trims that attaches to the hood. The sleeves are long and have ribbed cuffs to seal in the warmth. We love the herringbone design.
