If you’re looking for a double stroller that’s compact but has all the bells and whistles of a full-featured stroller, stop right here: the Baby Jogger City Mini 2 Double Stroller Review.

Baby Jogger (who comically only makes one jogging stroller now) has offered this wonderful double version of their all-time best-selling stroller, the City Mini, since 2007. As of January 2020, the City Mini Double (the newest version is now the City Mini Double “2”) has gotten a flattering (yet heavier…) makeover, securing its spot as one of the most durable and high-quality side-by-side strollers for the money — a true parent favorite.

Baby Jogger City Mini 2 Double

Actually — it’s one of my most favorite strollers, too (Note: I own the 2016 version, but not a much has changed. More on that later…). When my twins were born, in addition to the Valco Baby Tri-Mode Duo X, we also purchased the City Mini Double with an attachable glider board for my older child. Because our Valco was so big and much more difficult to fold, it became our “stay in the garage and use in the ‘hood” stroller, while the City Mini is our “take everywhere” stroller.

Yes, our whole family loves our City Mini Double!

My husband and I love it because of its ease of use, great maneuverability, and awesome portability. It’s soooo easy to fold (if you have a glider board like we do, you must detach it first before folding), and it doesn’t take up too much trunk space either (that said, I have a Toyota Sienna minivan, so nothing takes up too much trunk space in my car).

The kids love it because it’s comfortable, and each child can decide how far back (or not) to recline, as well as how far forward to pull their respective sunshade down.

Us at the zoo — yes, this is only a double and we are using it improperly — but when a photo op calls, you gotta do what you gotta do…

No, it’s not an all-terrain stroller, nor is it a running stroller. But it’s still super easy and seamless to maneuver. In fact, you’ll be able to roll over grass and bumps MUCH more easily with this than you would with an umbrella stroller or a cheaper side-by-side. Nice, right?

Baby Jogger City Mini 2 Double Stroller Review: Updates

Before we get too deep into the nitty gritty, let’s take a look at what’s new on the 2020 model of the City Mini 2 Double Stroller

First and foremost, the fabrics and stroller design have been updated and are much sleeker and angular looking. Although the mechanics of the stroller are the same, Baby Jogger claims that the upgraded design increases the stroller’s maneuverability and nimbleness. Also, the stroller now comes in two colors: Jet (black) and Slate (gray and black).

In addition, the City Mini 2 Double now has independently operated adjustable footrests, which, along with the near-flat recline, allow babies to stretch out and get comfy for stroller naps. Also, when the footrests are up, parents get access to the underseat storage basket from the front of the stroller as well as the back. This is helpful as it was always hard — at least for me — to stuff my belongings into the storage basket from the back.

Lastly, the City Mini 2 Double has some new upgraded accessories (this is both a positive and negative — yay for updated accessories! Boo for having to purchase all new accessories to go with the newer model if you already own other Baby Jogger accessories from previous models).

Some of the new accessories include the Parent Console, Double Belly Bar and Child Snack Trays.

While some of the older model accessories will be compatible with City Mini 2 Double, Baby Jogger recommends purchasing the updated ones as they will be optimal for the new version of the stroller.

Note: You can still purchase the previous model of the City Mini Double for a lower price tag (~ $314), and without the new features and design.

Size & Weight

The new City Mini 2 Double is 29.75” wide (same as the previous model) and will get you through a standard door frame, but not with a ton of room to spare (standard door widths range from 32 – 36 inches). From personal experience, this is true — it just barely fits through the doorway at our favorite coffee shop. It definitely takes some finagling to shimmy this puppy through, but we always succeed because, you know, mama needs her coffee!

It weighs in at 31.8 lbs — 4 lbs heavier (!!!) — than the previous City Mini model, which weighs 28.6 lbs. The increase in weight is due to a bar that was added near the rear, as well as the new features and design. This is definitely a bummer, and one of the major complaints about the new model.

The City Mini 2 Double holds an impressive 100 lbs of total baby meat (50 lbs per seat). This is also the same as the previous model.

Yes, it’s Disney Approved…

Car Seat Compatibility

Unlike its competitor, the Britax B-Lively Double, the City Mini 2 Double is compatible with several car seat brands. There are adapters for the Maxi Cosi, Be Safe, Cybex, Britax, City Go infant seat, and Graco SnugRide ClickConnect seats — all sold separately.

Though the City Mini 2 Double can only take one car seat, the seats lie nearly flat, so you can still use it from birth without any car seat (see below). In fact, this is what we did with our twins when they were itty bitty — we never used a car seat with this stroller, and it worked out just fine.

Alternatively, you can use two Baby Jogger Prams (sold separately) to lay your newborns in as well.

Seats

Speaking of, though the seat recline is nearly flat, it can’t sit totally upright. This is true for most strollers, but it’s still worth nothing since it can be an annoyance to some kids. If you know your little one won’t like sitting with a slight recline, we recommend you look elsewhere.

That said, the seats recline independently, which is a nice touch, and the new 2020 model has adjustable calf support so babies can really stretch out and get comfortable. The seats also have flaps that you can roll up to expose mesh back vents for ventilation. We use these features all of the time — it’s inevitable that one of my twins wants to lay back and ride in the shade, while the other wants to sit up and see the world.

The City Mini 2 Double’s harnesses are easy to adjust for height. Simply twist the stopper, feed them out, then feed them back in — voilà!

Canopy and Braking

The canopies are amazingly huge and have two peekaboo windows each. In fact, these are some of the biggest canopies on the market. We absolutely love these large canopies on our sunny weekend morning walks to the Farmer’s Market — they seriously keep every inch of my girls’ bodies protected from the sun.

The handlebar on the City Mini 2 Double does not adjust (it does on the City Mini GT2 Double). However, it was elongated in the 2016 model to make it better for tall parents. I’m short and my husband is very tall, and it’s comfortable and easy for both of us to push. It also has easy, one-step braking.

Wheels & Suspension

As previously mentioned, the 8” EVA wheels on the City Mini 2 Double are quite good for a “regular” (non all-terrain) stroller. In fact, it even has front-wheel suspension for an even smoother ride (this was not changed from the City Mini Double to the City Mini 2 Double).

Overall, this stroller maneuvers quite nicely and turns on a dime, although when weighed down with two heavy children, you’ll undoubtedly have to use two hands.

Folding & Carrying

The famous Baby Jogger “fold” is the gold standard when it comes to stroller-folding – HA! Many companies have copied this mechanism because it works so well.

How does it work?  With one hand on each of the fold handles, simply pull up and – BAM! – the stroller folds in half (above). Turn the front wheels to the side for a tighter fold. It seriously is the easiest fold ever — I love it.

Once folded, however, the City Mini 2 Double does not stand on its own, which is a huge bummer. I find it odd that this was not part of the stroller’s upgrade.

The size of the folded stroller is somewhere in the middle for a double, and will fit into any large trunk and even medium-sized trunks like that of a Ford Focus. Micro trunks, not so much.

*Note, all strollers in this category have roughly the same folded footprint.

Storage and other Features

The storage basket on the City Mini is easily described as “medium-sized.” You can stuff a regular diaper bag down there, but nothing too giant. That said, it’s perfect for holding water bottles, diapers, wipes, baby toys, blankets, jackets, and other such items that are smaller or that can be flattened.

But the real issue, in my opinion (and many parents agree), is that larger items don’t fit well because of the bar down the middle. This is a really big pain but not uncommon for double strollers. However, with the new adjustable leg rests on the 2020 model, you will now be able to access the basket from the front of the stroller too.

City Mini 2 Double in Slate

It does have mesh pockets in the back of the seats for smaller essentials. The City Mini Double doesn’t come with a parent console, but you can (and should) purchase one separately. Or you can just make one kid walk and throw everyone’s coats and belongings on the second seat (kidding… sort of!).

Baby Jogger City Mini 2 Double Stroller Review — Bottom line: with a solid car seat compatibility and a beautiful build quality, the City Mini 2 Double is pretty great. It really is one of the the quintessential side-by-sides. Though we are disappointed that the new model of this stroller is now heavier and therefore more difficult to maneuver (and lift in and out of your vehicle), we still think it’s a solid and somewhat economical choice. It’s been our go-to, take-everywhere stroller since my twins were born in 2016. Bonus: it meets Disney size requirements.

Comments

  1. I just wanted to note that these do not take Nuna car seats. We purchased one then had to return it because I assumed it would take Nuna because it had adapters for Cybex and Maxi Cosi, but it does not! In general, I found the car seat adapter situation at Baby Jogger to be very confusing since their double, GT, and 2 (updated) models within the City Mini line all use different adapters, and not all models will take all car seats. I had to speak to customer service to get it figured out – they were very nice, but I was really disappointed that the City Mini line won’t take Nuna and want to warn other parents in case they are purchasing one!

    1. Hi Rachelle!
Thank you so much for this very insightful and helpful information. Our readers will be very glad to know this. I’m sorry for your frustrating experience!!
      Best,
      ~ M

  2. Thank you so much for such a thorough review! My kids will be 22 months apart and I am debating between the different Baby Jogger models. You mention that the seat does not sit completely upright and that can be annoying – in fact that is my biggest pet peeve about the BabyZen Yoyo. Do you have a recommendation for a double that has all the amazing qualities of the city mini (big canopy, lay almost flat, easy fold, easy push) but can also sit a toddler upright?

  3. Hi there,
As far as I can tell, the double does not accept an adapter for Chicco/peg perego car seats (didn’t see anything about Clek either). If you find otherwise, please share a link! That fact is a deal breaker for us since that’s what we’ve got.

  4. Hi! I’m curious about the rider-board attachment. I purchased one this summer that was horrible. It listed from one side to the other, rubbed against the wheels of the jogging stroller we were using, and made walking a very slow process. Our kids are almost 4, almost 2, and #3 is due in April, so I am looking for a double-wide that would work with a rider-board or sit-to-stand feature, preferably for both of the older kiddos to ride on if they want. (Little sister copies everything big brother does!) Any thoughts?

    1. Hi Katie!
I have this rider board attachment — mine does not wobble and it doesn’t butt up against the back wheels either. That said, it definitely is only meant for one passenger (I know what you mean about little sis wanting to follow big brother – my twins want to do everything their older sister does too!).
You may want to take a peek at the Joovy Qool, which allows you to turn it into a double stroller, and add a bench seat for a kiddo that wants to sit, and not stand.
You should also check out our recc’s for the top strollers for big families (3 or more kiddos). I also have the Valco Baby Tri Mode Duo X, and my three kiddos love it. Of course they fight over who gets the “Queen Seat”. 🙂
Good luck — I hope you find the perfect stroller for your fam!
      ~ M

  5. Very disappointed to find out that the canopy can not be used for the toddler is you have an infant car seat attached. The canopy is blocked by the car seat.

  6. Hello,

Just to note the needed adaptor for the City Go which is sold as part of their single stroller travel system is not available and hasn’t been for almost a year at this point. I had planned to use my two year olds car seat (the city go) and purchase the city mini gt2 to use with her and my new baby (sparing myself the extra cost of buying another infant car seat) but this sadly won’t be possible.

  7. Hi, does the glider board attached to the side by side double stroller? I have the tandem but we’re using the side by side at Disney and i wanted to bring our glider board for it too

  8. Hi Marissa,
I have been going back and forth as to which double stroller to choose. My kids will be 13 months apart. I want a bassinette, a smooth ride, SBS, and lightweight stroller. What do you suggest? We would need for walks and to go to appoinmetns. I was looking at the babyjogger GT2 but then saw the baby jogger city mini and britax B lively. Open to any suggestions 🙂

    1. Hi Mary!
I reached out to Meg on this one. She mentioned that “light weight” and “smooth ride” are, unfortunately, at odds with each other. Hard to find a stroller that has both. But she did suggest you check out the Bumbleride Indie Twin, and the City Mini GT2 Double as your best bets.
      Good luck!

  9. Hi Lucie! thank you for this review. We are going to Disney soon and I need a second hand double stroller for the long days in the parks. However, my kids will be 5 and 4 (and they are quite tall, around 45 and 42 inches). Do you think that this stroller could be a good option? or will their legs be hanging beyond the footrest? If you know a better double stroller for tall and older kids I am all ears 🙂
