The Baby Jogger City Mini double strollers recently got a facelift: the regular is now called the City Mini Double “2” (which was just upgraded in January of 2020). If you like the regular double, chances are you’ll love the all-terrain version, the City Mini GT2 Double, the newest version of what was called the city Mini GT Double (make sense? They essentially added a “2” to the new versions).
Here’s the main thing you need to know about the new Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 Double Stroller Review: Everything about the stroller is the same as the regular City Mini 2 Double (the non “GT” version) – except for the differences stated below. To sum it up: this version (the GT2) is essentially a pimped out, all-terrain version of the regular City Mini Double 2. We won’t repeat everything from that review, so we recommend you start by reading that.
Despite the brand name, you cannot (should not, rather) use this one for jogging. But it is a great stroller to take for a power walk through the neighborhood.
This newest version includes the following: a sleeker design with upgraded fabrics, adjustable footrests for your kiddos, magnetic peekaboo windows, forever air, all-suspension tires, Baby Jogger’s signature in-seat fold, an adjustable handlebar, and the inclusion of both a handbrake and a foot brake. Sadly, like the City Mini Double 2, the GT2 is heavier (4 lbs!!) than the previous model (it was 32.5 lbs and now weighs 36.6 lbs — this is due to a bar that was added near the rear as well as the new features and design).
This weight gain is a HUGE bummer because a big selling point of the City Mini GT was that it was “lightweight and compact, yet all-terrain”. Now it is simply “compact and all terrain”, which is still good for people looking for smaller strollers. 36 pounds though? Damn.
Right now, it’s available in jet black and slate (grey).
For the rest of this review, we will be discussing the new GT2 Double model.
The City Mini GT2 Double is a side-by-side all-terrain double stroller that manages to be both nimble and compact! It serves an important niche: city dwellers who still want all-terrain capabilities to roll through parks and old sidewalks; and, you know, to zig zag through drunks passed out on the sidewalk (cue #SanFranLiving), cable car tracks, and whatever else city living throws your way.
Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 Double Stroller Review: Size & Weight
As mentioned, at 36.6 lbs, this stroller is a good bit heavier than the regular City Mini Double 2 version. Crazy. Anyway, the width is the same, roughly 30” wide. At this width, you’ll be able to get through modern doorways. Because of the smaller tires (vs. a full sized all terrain stroller, like BOB), the stroller itself isn’t as monstrous.
To give you some appreciation of this, below is a picture of the City Mini GT Double (2016 model — but the size is that same as the 2020 version) folded next to the Bumbleride Indie Twin, which isn’t even the biggest stroller out there. You can see the size of the City Mini GT is a little more manageable.
And despite its (now) heavyweight status, this stroller pushes smoothly and effortlessly on all kinds of terrain — even with one hand! — and is super easy to steer.
Yes, it’s also Disney approved!
Braking, Accessories, & Storage
The GT2 version has many bells and whistles that the regular City Mini doesn’t have: forever air, all-terrain tires, an adjustable handlebar, extra padded seats that are easy to remove and throw into the wash, and a convenient hand brake — in addition to a regular footbrake — on the side.
The seats themselves are also taller, which will give you longer use as your kids grow older.
On the downside, however, is the underseat storage basket (below). Although it’s fairly large, like on the City Mini Double, there’s a bar in front making it difficult to fit larger items (like a larger diaper bag). The bar is a real bummer, I tell ya.
While this issue wasn’t remedied on the GT2, the basket is now easier to access due to the new adjustable calf support on both seats (you can access the basket when the seats are raised, see below). They totally stole this from the Britax B-Agile, which serves them right because Britax has ripped off so many of Baby Jogger’s designs — HA!
If you need more space for your must-have items, there are pockets on the back of each seat.
There are also some pretty cool accessories you can purchase separately to offer you a little more storage. For instance, the Baby Jogger Parent Console is great (I have it and love it); it attaches to the stroller’s handlebar, and includes an insulated cup holder, a large covered storage pouch, and a secondary pouch (for things like another drink, your cell phone, keys, a small baby toy, etc).
You can also purchase the double child tray for your City Mini GT2 Double (note that this is also compatible with the City Mini 2 Double) — but don’t be fooled by the name of the product… two trays are NOT included in the package, only one (ridiculous, I know). So, you’ll have to purchase TWO double child trays (really annoying), as well as two belly bars — note that you cannot attach the child trays to the stroller without the belly bar (whaaaat?).
While some of the older model accessories will be compatible with City Mini GT2 Double, Baby Jogger recommends purchasing the updated ones, as they will be optimal for the new versions of the strollers. Meh.
Car Seat/Bassinet Capabilities
The City Mini GT2 Double accepts one infant car seat and is compatible with several car seat brands. There are adapters for the Maxi Cosi, Cybex/Clek, Britax, Graco and Baby Jogger seats. All sold separately.
Otherwise, the stroller seats recline to a near flat position so you can lay infants in them without a car seat.
To answer the question: can I use it for twins? Laying the seats flat: yes; car seats: no.
The four wheels on the GT2 Double are 8.5” all-terrain, forever air, rubber tires, which never need to be pumped yet still feel and ride like air-filled tires. This is a major upgrade from the regular City Mini, which has plastic tires. On the flipside, compared to full-sized all-terrain doubles that have huge (16”!) air-filled tires that often go flat or need to be pumped up occasionally, this is a big perk. Believe me, not having to pump your stroller tires every month is HUGE; it’s always such an annoyance.
A definite upgrade on the GT2 Double from its predecessor is that it now has all-wheel suspension (it used to only offer front wheel suspension) which makes for a really nice, smooth ride; though you’re not going to take it off-roading, this stroller rides really well over uneven, bumpy terrain, like cobblestones and pavement cracks, as well as grass, mulch, rocks, etc. Compared to a “regular” double stroller, like a Sit N Stand or even City Mini: the difference in the ride is night and day! For real.
The fold is just as awesome as on the regular City Mini Double 2 version and the footprint is roughly the same — tight and compact, especially for an all-terrain double stroller! This is another major selling point for those who live in smaller urban spaces.
Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 Double Stroller —Bottom line: This stroller is now unreasonably heavy, but still a good compact, all-terrain, double side-by-side stroller that rides over nearly anything, yet still maintains its “mini-ness.” It also meets Disney-size requirements. We wish it had a larger storage basket, but apart from that, there’s nothing we don’t love, and the sleek new design and fabrics on the GT2 version are really beautiful.
