Top Convertible Double Strollers

Convertible strollers…convert from a single to a double stroller – and back again. It’s stroller magic, people. That’s why we’re running down the best convertible strollers on the market for 2023. New(er) on the scene is Mockingbird’s “single to double” addition and the Baby Jogger City Select 2.

UPPAbaby Vista 2019

Although you can technically use a side-by-side double stroller for one child — it’s unwieldy. Plus it’s just a teeeensy bit awkward. Convertibles give you options. And because they’re so versatile, convertible double strollers are a great value. If you’re the “getting your money’s worth” type of parent, you’re in the right place.

A tandem (convertible) next to a side-by-side

On the downside, convertibles are generally big and heavy, since they ultimately have to hold 90-100 lbs. This is to be expected with any double stroller, but it also means that convertibles used in singles mode are larger and heavier (about ten pounds or so heavier) than “regular”/non-convertible single strollers.

The Baby Jogger City Select

Don’t underestimate how much an extra 10 lbs (or so) adds to the agony factor of a stroller! Weight matters a lot.

Top Picks for Families with Infants and Toddlers

$$ ~ Evenflo Xpand ~ Economy Pick ~ $349 as a single & ~ $498 as a double: cleverly engineered convertible stroller. Click link to see video preview.

$$ ~ Graco Modes Nest2Grow ~ Versatile ~ $399 as a single & ~ $548 as a double: a good but heavy (SUPER HEAVY) option, very versatile.

$$$ ~ Mockingbird Single-to-Double ~ Best Economy Convertible ~ $450 as a single & ~ $595 as double: attractive stroller with same size toddler and 2nd seat, making it great for twins, and can be folded with both seats attached.

$$$ ~ Phil & Teds Sport ~ Best Inline Convertible ~ $489 as a single & ~ $705 as a double: sporty, highly maneuverable and easy to push and turn (because 2nd seat goes in rear), has a small footprint, but almost no storage.

$$$$ ~ Baby Jogger City Select 2 ~ Best Convertible for Bigger Kids ~ $659 as a base model single & ~ $749 as an Eco Collection single / ~ $699 as a Base Model double & ~ $799 as Eco Collection double: roomy convertible with lots of seating versatility, slightly less maneuverable (2nd seat goes in front, making it long and harder to steer), not good on hills!

$$$$ ~ Nuna Demi Grow ~ Best for Urban/Tight Spaces, Superior Maneuverability ~ $950 as a single & ~ $1,200 as double: luxe convertible stroller with stacked design that maneuvers great over hilly terrain. Lack of under-seat storage space when used in doubles mode.

$$$$ ~ UPPAbaby Vista V2 ~ Best Luxury Convertible ~ $1,099 as a single & ~ $1,249 as a double: top notch product with exceptional features and functionality, very maneuverable and fairly roomy, both seats have good recline, 2nd seat (“Rumble seat”) goes in front

They are all great picks and have a lot in common with one another (the P&T Sport is the most different, being a 3-wheeler)

1. Evenflo Xpand ~ Economy Pick

  • Price: Single Stroller — $379, Second seat — $149, Travel System (includes stroller frame, toddler/carriage seat, SafeMax infant car seat with base, built-in upper and lower adapters and one cup holder) — ~ $319, Rider Board — $62
  • Weight: 28 lbs (single), 31.1 lbs (travel system)
  • Weight Limits: 55 lbs per seat

I was blown away by this economy convertible stroller when I first encountered it at JPMA. It’s way cheaper than anything like it – and is extremely well engineered, with a top seat that can slide up or down the frame to better accommodate the 2nd seat (if/when you add it). This gives you better maneuverability because it pushes the center of gravity to the rear of the stroller. It also allows you to be closer (height-wise) to your rear-most child.

Excerpt of Review:

“We were so stoked to be introduced to this stroller at a recent baby show. We couldn’t believe how well engineered it was – and for such an incredibly attainable price.

This incredibly versatile stroller can easily grow and morph to meet the needs of your changing family over the years. You can purchase it as a single stroller for one baby or as a bundle for two (the travel system comes with the stroller frame, toddler seat, Evenflo SafeMax infant car seat and base, built-in upper and lower adapters and one expandable cup holder!). You can even add on a rider board to accommodate an older third child.

The two kid’s seats can be turned around to rear-face (ideal for the baby phase) or to face outward, and each seat holds up to 55 lb.”

2. Graco Modes Nest2Grow

Graco Modes Nest2Grow

The Graco Modes Nest2Grow stroller is brand new on the scene, and offers 15+ different ways to ride, along with adjustable height positions to bring baby closer to you depending on your own height. In addition, the seat is reversible, so baby can face you or the world.

As a single, you can use this stroller with its standard stroller seat, a car seat (it accepts all Graco car infant seats) or an infant carry cot (sold separately).

The Modes Nest2Grow comes equipped with second seat adapters for when you’re ready to use it as a double. If you have a baby, however, and aren’t ready to use the big kid seat yet, you can attach a Graco car seat or carry cot (again, sold separately). Alternatively, you can purchase the travel system if you know you’re going to need it right off the bat for an infant and older child.

Single to Double

Folding takes one step in the singles mode and three steps in doubles mode. Once folded, the stroller does self-stand.

The Modes Nest2Grow comes with a parent cupholder — great for your cup of coffee or water bottle — and a fairly large underseat basket which will fit your diaper bag, baby toys, blankets, shopping bags, etc.

A downside with this stroller is its weight. 30.6 pounds is heavy! This is not the kind of thing you want to be hauling in and out of your car all the time — unless you want to use it as your strength training exercise!

Bottom Line: Convertibles are expensive by their very nature, but the Graco Modes Nest2Grow is a more affordable option in this category. It’s easy to use, very versatile, and while it may not be the fanciest product or highest build quality, it gets the job done and performs quite admirably, especially given its low price, but be prepared for heavy lifting!

3. Mockingbird Single to Double — Best Economy Convertible

  • Price: $450; 2nd Seat Kit (to make it a double): $145; Riding Board: $95
  • Stroller Weight: 26.5 lbs without 2nd Seat; 35 lbs with two seats
  • Weight Limit: 45 lbs per seat

The Mockingbird Single-to-Double stroller is relatively new on the scene, and we’re totally here for it. This convertible stroller can easily accommodate up to three kids, with the use of the 2nd seat kit and rider board, both purchased separately. Thus, the Mockingbird is a good pick for big families.

Both the toddler seat and the 2nd seat are exactly the same — there’s no big kid/little kid seat situation, like on some convertible strollers. Both seats can accommodate children up to 45 lbs, which definitely isn’t as much as the Nuna Demi Grow (50 lbs) or the Evenflo Pivot Xpand (55lbs), but should get you to your kids’ 3rd (and maybe even 4th??) birthdays.

With its latest seating configuration (infant car seat up and facing parents, toddler seat down and facing out — a seating placement that was requested by a lot of parents and that Mockingbird delivered), the stroller offers 18+ seat arrangements.

The Mockingbird Single-to-Double accepts two infant car seats, and both stroller seats lay perfectly flat. With the purchase of the infant insert ($35, sold separately), you can place your babe(s) directly in the stroller seats from the getgo.

Bonus: You can fold the Mockingbird Single-to-Double with both seats attached (and it’s a super simple one-handed fold, too — woohoo!).

Excerpt of Review:

“A couple of years back, a colleague in the business told me the Mockingbird Stroller is “the UPPABaby Vista, but for much less!” Naturally, we were intrigued and eager to give you our honest take of it.

Mockingbird made its grand debut in the baby aisle with the Mockingbird single stroller, which is now more like the UPPABaby Cruz v2, but they recently launched their new double stroller (which is technically a convertible stroller). Though very similar to its big sis’, the single to double stroller stole the spotlight with a few smart adjustments to allow for room and accommodate for expandability.

The UPPABaby Vista V2 has been THE top full-size/convertible stroller in the luxury stroller category for about 10+ years now, but does the more affordable direct-to-consumer version actually compete? We think it does! Especially now that both strollers can be used as doubles/convertibles.

The Mockingbird double stroller has all the basics of a high-end stroller: a suspension system with substantial wheels, a kick-ass canopy, a good brake, an adjustable handlebar, generous storage, and a high weight capacity. Plus, the single-to-double conversion process is as easy as it gets (more on that later). For a convertible stroller that only costs $395 (for comparison, the UPPAbaby Vista is $899), it’s an impressive accomplishment.

Let’s have a closer look…”

4. Phil & Teds Sport

  • Price as Single: MSRP $489; Doubles kit: ~ $189
  • Price as Double: $679
  • Stroller Weight: 27 lbs (single), which is pretty light for convertibles (in singles mode), and 31 lbs (double)
  • Weight Limits: 44 lbs (a 5 y/o) for primary seat and 33 lbs (a 3 y/o) for the second seat

All in all, this is a compact, sporty, maneuverable, 3-wheeled double stroller.

Excerpt of Review:

“Founded by a father and son team in 1994, Phil & Teds is a fun-loving juvenile products company based in New Zealand (and who doesn’t love the Kay-ways!). Phil & Teds makes high chairs, car seats and travel gear, but are most known for their inline (aka tandem) double strollers.

To make a stroller into a double, you add the second seat attachment, which goes over the rear wheels, thereby creating a reverse stadium seating configuration.

Phil & Teds makes several popular inline convertibles. We’ll review their bread & butter, the Sport (which used to be called the Navigator), and then discuss their other models. Quality-wise, Phil & Teds is right in the middle: better than the economy brands like Graco, but not quite as well made as the luxury brands.”

5. Baby Jogger City Select 2 ~ Top Pick for Bigger Kids

We’ll say at the start that we love the build quality of Baby Jogger strollers — they have a luxury “feel” without the luxury price. The City Select 2 replaces the Baby Jogger City Select and City Select Lux, combining the best features of both strollers.

Excerpt of Review:

Are you in the market for a convertible, all-terrain luxury stroller that can easily accommodate one, two, or — with a glider board (sold separately) — even three kids? Take a peek at our Baby Jogger City Select review. This stroller can be purchased as a single or double. If you buy the single first and down the road need a double for baby #2, you can purchase the second seat accessory to transform your single into a double. Cool! In addition, this stroller boasts 16 different seating configurations — it’s really versatile and durable and truly could be the only stroller your family needs.

We’ll say at the start that we love the build quality of Baby Jogger strollers — they have a high-end “feel” without the luxury price. This is one of the reasons Baby Jogger strollers, such as the City Select, are such crowd favorites.

6. Nuna Demi Grow — Top Pick for Urban/Tight Spaces

  • Price as a single: ~ $950; Price as a double: ~ $1,200
  • Price for second stroller seat: $249
  • Stroller Weight: 27.4 lbs (singles) and 35.6 (doubles)
  • Weight Limit: 50 lbs per seat

Best for:

  • Parents who want a luxury, stacked stroller (and don’t want a Phil and Ted’s – ha!)
  • Those who live in hilly terrain — good steerage and maneuverability
  • Especially good for shorter parents who have trouble seeing over longer strollers

Not good for:

  • Families on a tight budget
  • Parents who value under-seat storage while in doubles mode
  • Those who desire double rear-facing mode

Excerpt of Review:

If you’ve been eyeing this stroller on looks alone (who hasn’t?), good news: this baby has beauty and brains. It’s an incredibly well-designed piece of equipment, both aesthetically and functionally.

The Demi Grow is the only luxury stroller with a stacked seat design, similar to Phil & Teds and the now discontinued Britax B-Ready. The stacked seat design shortens the length of the stroller, making it easier to maneuver than its closest competitors, including the Thule Sleek and the UPPABaby Vista; the “cost” is the loss of the storage basket when used in doubles mode. More on that later.

Overall, we love this stroller and think it may be the best in its class of luxury convertible strollers (with caveats).

Veer Switch & Roll ~ $1,346

Veer, who is known for their famous Veer Wagon, recently introduced their brand new Switchback System, which is a modular system that features the Switchback Seat (~ $399) designed to fit their new line of strollers, which includes the jogger, the wagon, bike seat, and camp chair, and it converts to a booster chair as well. WOW! So cool. The idea here is that Veer is all you’ll ever need — so if you’re going this route, know you’re buying into an entire system (kind of like when you buy an iPhone… and then become an Apple user for life…).

So what is the Veer Switch & Roll? It’s essentially a convertible, modular all-terrain stroller. It comes with two Switchback seats, the stroller frame and the second seat adapter. Again, in addition to your stroller, these seats will also fit on all the Veer frames mentioned above. If you have a newborn, you can attach all major infant car seats (adapters sold separately) or the Switchback bassinet (~ $199).

Here are some quick stats about the Veer Switch & Roll:

  • Stroller mode features multiple, reversible seat positions
  • Seat Weight Capacity: 50lbs in rear & 40lbs in front
  • Basket Weight Capacity: 15lbs
  • Bassinet Weight Capacity: Birth to 20lbs
  • Weighs 35 lbs

Note that this is so new we haven’t gotten a chance to play around with it yet ourselves (nor are there many reviews out there yet). But as soon as we’re able to get our hands on it, we’ll report back! In the meantime, check out this Magic Beans video showcasing the Veer Switchback Seat.

7. UPPAbaby Vista V2 – Top Luxury Pick

  • Price as a single: $999; Price as a double: ~ $1,249
  • Stroller Weight: 26.6 lbs (single) and 32.6 lbs (double)
  • Weight Limit: The Toddler Seat can hold up to 50 lbs, and the Rumble Seat can accommodate children up to 35 lbs. Therefore, with both seats attached, the stroller can hold up to 85 lbs. (Note that the bassinet can hold up to 20 lbs.)

Excerpt of Review:

“The UPPAbaby Vista, one of the top strollers of all time, got a much-needed facelift in early 2020, and is now called the UPPAbaby Vista “V2”.

Like the City Select, this stroller can convert from a single to a double, using the Rumble Seat, and even carry an older 3rd child with the addition of the Piggyback Ride-Along Board. Loved by parents of singletons, twins, and two or three kids of differing ages, the UPPAbaby Vista V2 is a solid, luxury pick (as you would hope for the price — HA!).

Note that if you have the older version of the UPPAbaby Vista, many of the same accessories, car seats, adapters, etc. work on the Vista and V2.”
